Johanna Burian – Principal Horn

Johanna L. Burian is the principal horn of the Boulder Symphony and a private lesson instructor. She also serves as co-chair of the symphony’s Player’s Committee and Personnel Manager.

She holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and a Master of Music in Performance from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. She has been on three European orchestra tours, twice as principal horn and studied music for a semester at the Austro-American Institute in Vienna, Austria. Johanna enjoys playing chamber music in addition to her orchestral pursuits and was a founding member and principal horn of PlayEthic, an Indianapolis-based woodwind octet, before moving to Colorado. She has studied with Richard Graef, Robert Danforth, and Michael Höltzel.

When not playing music, Johanna can be found with her husband and 2 daughters exploring Colorado’s natural wonders. She enjoys swimming, biking, hiking, and backpacking and making quilts when forced indoors.
