BOULDER SYMPHONY’S MUSIC DIRECTOR AND CONDUCTOR, DEVIN PATRICK HUGHES, FLIES TO BUDAPEST, HUNGARY THIS FALL TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PRESTIGIOUS SOLTI INTERNATIONAL CONDUCTING COMPETITION.

Boulder Symphony Music Director & Conductor Devin Patrick Hughes has been selected among hundreds of conductors around the the world to compete in the 2017 Solti International Conducting Competition in Budapest & Pécs, Hungary.
Maestro Hughes, who founded the Boulder Symphony in 2010 has brought new artistic heights and community engagement to classical music in Boulder for seven seasons, and is recognized for his exhilarating score interpretations, advocation for music accessibility, innate passion, and entrepreneurial vigor.
Hughes concurrently serves as Music Director of the Arapahoe Philharmonic and Denver Civic Youth Orchestra. Recently he was the only American selected with eleven other conductors worldwide to compete in the Toscanini International Conducting Competition in Parma, Italy in honor of the famed Maestro of the New York Philharmonic and La Scala, Arturo Toscanini. In addition to performing as a conducting fellow at the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen, Maestro Hughes has conducted orchestras across North America and Europe.
Filharmonia Hungary is happy to announce the Solti International Conducting Competition, which will be taking place in October and December 2017 in Hungary. The competition will be followed by wide media coverage and provides an excellent opportunity for young conductors to prove their talent by performing before a prestigious international jury and live TV audience.
Sir Georg Solti, original name György Stern Solti (born October 21, 1912, Budapest, Hungary— died September 5, 1997, Antibes, France), Hungarian-born British conductor and pianist, one of the most highly regarded conductors of the second half of the 20th century.
Solti studied at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest with Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály. He won the Geneva International Piano Competition in 1942. After the war he became music director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (1946–52), the Frankfurt Opera (1952–60), and the Royal Opera at Covent Garden (1961–71). He assumed British citizenship in 1972 and was knighted that same year.
From 1969 to 1991 Solti was music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, reestablishing that orchestra’s international reputation. He was chief conductor of the Orchestra of Paris (1972–75) and acted as musical adviser to the Paris Opéra from 1971 to 1973. He served as the principal conductor and artistic director of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1979 to 1983. During his career Solti won 32 Grammy Awards, more than any other performer in recording history. His Memoirs (also published as Solti on Solti; written with Harvey Sachs) appeared in 1997 shortly after his death.
