BOULDER, Colo. May 16, 2024 — Boulder Symphony & Music Academy is delighted to announce the appointment of Elizabeth Alvarado, PhD, as its new Executive Director, following the departure of Andrew Krimm in March. Elizabeth brings extensive experience as a musician, educator, and advocate for arts accessibility, making her an ideal leader to guide the organization forward.

Elizabeth’s musical journey began at the age of eight with flute lessons from her uncle, a high school band director. Her talent and dedication led her to perform internationally, attend prestigious music conservatories in Chicago, and work as a contract musician. She holds degrees from DePaul University and the Chicago College of Performing Arts.

Pursuing a passion for music history, Elizabeth earned her PhD from the University of Chicago, where she explored music’s role in American society. She presented research at conferences, taught courses, and advocated for educational accessibility.

After receiving her PhD, Elizabeth worked as an academic advisor and lecturer at the University of Northern Colorado, focusing on improving outcomes for first-generation students and students of color. She also founded Eleven Echoes, LLC, providing writing and research services for various organizations.

Elizabeth is excited to join the Boulder Symphony & Music Academy and engage with Boulder’s diverse musical community. Of her new appointment, Elizabeth stated:

“The Boulder Symphony & Music Academy is unique—we have both a phenomenal symphony orchestra and a school for musicians of all ages, levels, and instruments. I love how that integration makes it possible to experience music however you want to, whoever you are. I’m so excited to join this community of profoundly gifted performers, teachers, and staff, and I look forward to advancing Boulder’s legacy of vibrant and diverse music-making.”

Devin Patrick Hughes, Boulder Symphony’s Music Director and Conductor, shares:

“I am thrilled to welcome Elizabeth Alvarado! She brings a passion for community-building and creating access for all to the symphony and academy. She also comes with amazing ideas for collaboration and a perspective that BS&MA is here first and foremost to serve our community and connect people through the joy of making music!”

Boulder Symphony & Music Academy is eager to benefit from Elizabeth’s leadership and fresh perspective as it continues to inspire and nurture the next generation of musicians. Elizabeth’s vision and experience aligns with BS&MA’s mission to enrich the community through exceptional musical performances and educational programs. By fostering a love for music in people of all ages, the organization aims to make a lasting impact on the cultural landscape of Boulder and beyond.
